The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, and the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, have congratulated Nigeria’s former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, describing him as a gift to the nation.
In separate birthday messages to Babangida on his 85th birthday, the duo said the former military leader is a detribalised Nigerian.
Turaki, in a statement he personally signed, described Babangida as one of the most detribalised Nigerians ever.
“At 85, we celebrate the grace Allah has bestowed upon you and the selfless way you have used that grace, both in your official and personal capacities, making you one of the most detribalised Nigerians ever,“ he added.
Alhaji Idris in a statement by his Special Assistant (Media), Rabiu Ibrahim, described Babangida as an elder statesman whose life and service occupy an important place in Nigeria’s contemporary history.
The Minister said the former military president’s journey through military service, national leadership and statesmanship represents a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political and institutional evolution.
He noted that decades after leaving office, Babangida has remained engaged with issues of national importance, particularly those concerning Nigeria’s unity, stability and development.
According to him, Babangida’s experiences in leadership and public service constitute a valuable reservoir from which succeeding generations can draw lessons about the complexities and responsibilities of nation-building.
“General Babangida remains an important voice in our national journey, and at 85, we celebrate his service, his statesmanship and his enduring commitment to a united Nigeria,” Idris said.
