The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has called on young people in the state to reject all forms of thuggery, violence and criminality, including the misuse of social media for digital thuggery.

The police commissioner made the call while speaking during activities marking the 2026 International Youth Day in Anambra State, where he joined a youth-focused walk against thuggery and other forms of criminal behaviour.

CP Oji Ama said this year’s International Youth Day theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” highlights the shared aspirations of young people for dignity, opportunities, safety and a better future, regardless of their backgrounds.

He emphasised the role of sports in crime prevention, noting that organised sporting activities can help young people develop discipline, teamwork, confidence and healthy relationships while keeping them away from negative influences.

According to him, sports should be viewed not only as recreation but also as an investment in crime prevention and community security.

The commissioner identified negative peer influence, drug abuse, poverty, unemployment, intolerance and manipulation as some factors that contribute to crime among youths.

He further warned that the dangers have extended into the digital space, where social media platforms can be misused to spread false information, incite violence and recruit young people into criminal activities.

“To our youths, I say: do not allow yourselves to be used as instruments of violence or digital thuggery. Your future is far more valuable than any temporary reward,” he said.

CP Oji Ama stressed that the police cannot prevent crime alone, calling for stronger collaboration among youths, parents, schools, religious and traditional leaders, civil society organisations and communities.

He urged young people to embrace peace, responsible citizenship and responsible use of technology, assuring them that they remain an important part of the solution to insecurity.

“Our young people are not the problem. You are an important part of the solution. Together, let us build an Anambra where our youths can live safely, dream freely, and achieve their aspirations legitimately,” the commissioner said.
