A Customary Court, sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has heard the testimony of a man, Raheem, who alleged that his wife, Aishat, was a drunk and in the habit of wetting the bed, locking him in the room, and assaulting him physically.
Raheem also said that he set up businesses for Aishat on three different occasions, but that she ruined them.
The plaintiff told the court that he was no longer interested in their union.
Aishat agreed to divorce but denied all the allegations brought against her.
The defendant explained that she was the seventh wife the plaintiff would send packing.
Raheem, in his evidence, said, “I met my wife in 2020 and we started living together as husband and wife.
“I don’t know her parents. I only met her sister.
“We did not celebrate our marriage, and I did not pay her bride price.
“I realised a few weeks into our marriage that the greatest mistake I ever made in life was that of marrying my wife.
“Aishat is a drunk.
“She drinks herself to stupor almost every day.
“Aishat made matter worse by wetting the bed each time she drank.
“Our room stinks of her urine day and night.
“I sent her packing after I could no longer cope with her shameful behaviour.
“She came begging me to take her back and promising that she would change.
“I took her back, but now I am regretting that I did.
“I gave my wife N50,000 the first time to set up a business, which she did.
“I never stopped giving her feeding allowance and stocking our store with foodstuff despite this.
“But to my chagrin, all her wares disappeared from her shop within a month.
“She failed to give any reasonable explanation for the failure of the business.

“A few months later, she begged me to give her fund again to run another business which I agreed to.
“But like the first time, the resources went down the drain.
“Aishat later became uncontrollable.
“My wife locks me in the room and beats me black and blue.
“The last time she did, I reported her at the police station where I was advised to come to court.
“My lord, my marriage to my wife has failed.
“She would kill me if an end is not brought to our relationship.
“I, therefore, plead that this honourable court rules that we go our different ways.”
Aishat, responding, said, “I moved in with my husband shortly after we met.
“He started misbehaving not too long after we came together.
“I got fed up with him and I packed out of his house.
“It is true that he gave me N50,000 to set up a business.
“I was trading in kolanut, but he insisted I change my trade.
“I abandoned our marriage and relocated to Lagos after he refused that I had rest of mind.
“He came begging that I should take him back and I did.
“He made my life more miserable than he did initially.
“He gives me only N200 every morning for food.
“I fend for lunch and dinner by myself.
“My husband is an herbalist and he always refused that I interact with people in our neighbourhood.
“My lord, I am the seventh wife my husband is dragging to court for divorce.
“I agree that we go our different ways.”
The president of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case for judgment.
