Nigerian footballers produced a weekend of contrasting fortunes across Europe, with several Super Eagles stars delivering standout individual performances while others endured difficult results with their respective clubs.

From Semi Ajayi scoring against Manchester United in the Premier League to Victor Osimhen continuing his impressive start to the Turkish Super Lig season, Samuel Chukwueze earning the Man of the Match award in Serie A and Raphael Onyedika making an impressive competitive debut for Eintracht Frankfurt, it was another productive weekend for Nigeria’s football exports.

Nathan Tella also got on the scoresheet for Bayer Leverkusen, while goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo produced an outstanding display for Charlton Athletic against West Ham United.

However, there were disappointing results for Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka, who were involved as Coventry City lost to Arsenal, while Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon were involved in draws in Spain and France respectively.

Semi Ajayi stuns Manchester United

Semi Ajayi produced one of the biggest individual moments of the weekend after scoring for Hull City in their 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

The Nigerian defender opened the scoring 16 minutes into the contest, before helping Hull protect their advantage and secure a memorable victory over the Red Devils.

Ajayi’s contribution was not limited to the goal. He was composed defensively and helped Hull frustrate a Manchester United side that struggled to break through.

His performance underlined his importance to Hull and offered another encouraging sign for the Super Eagles, particularly with Nigeria continuing to search for defensive stability.

Chukwueze shines in Serie A

Samuel Chukwueze was another major Nigerian standout, earning the Man of the Match award as AC Milan began their Serie A campaign with a 2-1 victory over Torino.

The winger was lively throughout the encounter and played a role in Milan’s winning goal, with his delivery creating the opportunity for Adrien Rabiot to score.

Chukwueze repeatedly threatened Torino from the right flank and showed that he can contribute significantly when given freedom to attack.

His performance was particularly encouraging because of his tactical discipline. The Nigerian demonstrated that he can combine his attacking qualities with the defensive responsibilities demanded by his team.

For Chukwueze, the display could prove important as he looks to establish himself as a regular and influential figure at Milan.

Osimhen continues scoring spree

Victor Osimhen remains one of the most in-form Nigerian attackers in Europe.

The Galatasaray striker scored twice and provided an assist as the Turkish champions defeated Erzurumspor FK 4-0 in the Turkish Super Lig.

Osimhen first turned provider, setting up Yunus Akgün for Galatasaray’s second goal before scoring himself. He then completed his brace as Galatasaray cruised to victory.

His two goals further strengthened his excellent start to the campaign and underlined his status as one of the most dangerous strikers in European football.

What stood out was not only his finishing but also his overall contribution. Osimhen was involved in build-up play, created opportunities for teammates and constantly stretched the opposition defence with his movement.

With his form continuing to attract attention, the Nigerian striker has made a powerful early statement about his ambitions for the season.

Onyedika makes impressive Frankfurt debut

Raphael Onyedika enjoyed an outstanding competitive debut for Eintracht Frankfurt as the German club recorded an emphatic 11-0 victory over SC St. Tönis in the DFB-Pokal.

The Nigerian midfielder played the full 90 minutes and produced a composed performance in the middle of the pitch.

Onyedika showed good passing ability, positional discipline and strength in midfield as Frankfurt dominated the game from start to finish.

Although the opposition was significantly weaker, his performance was still encouraging as he begins a new chapter in Germany.

His adaptation to Frankfurt will be one of the Nigerian storylines worth following closely this season.

Tella gets on target for Leverkusen

Nathan Tella also enjoyed a productive outing as Bayer Leverkusen thrashed Wehen Wiesbaden 4-0 in the DFB-Pokal.

Tella came off the bench and scored Leverkusen’s third goal, giving him a timely start to the new campaign.

The Nigerian winger took advantage of his opportunity and showed his ability to make an impact even when introduced from the bench.

With competition for attacking positions at Leverkusen remaining intense, the goal could strengthen Tella’s case for more playing time.

Boniface benched in Leverkusen win

While Tella found the net, Victor Boniface was not involved in the major attacking moments of Leverkusen’s comfortable victory.

The Nigerian striker started the match on the bench as Leverkusen progressed comfortably in the cup.

Boniface will now be looking to regain a regular starting role as the season develops, with competition for places in Leverkusen’s attack expected to remain fierce.

For Nigeria, his continued presence in the squad of a top European club remains valuable, particularly given the depth of attacking options available to the Super Eagles.

Okonkwo shines against West Ham

Arthur Okonkwo produced one of the weekend’s most impressive goalkeeping performances as Charlton Athletic secured a 2-1 victory over West Ham United.

The Nigerian goalkeeper made eight saves during the encounter, repeatedly denying the hosts as they searched for a way back into the game.

Okonkwo’s composure under pressure stood out, particularly against a Premier League opponent.

His performance provided an early indication of his quality and will boost his confidence as he settles into his new environment.

For Nigeria, the emergence of another goalkeeper capable of performing under pressure is a positive development.

Awoniyi, Onyeka suffer Arsenal defeat

Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka endured a difficult outing as Coventry City suffered a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal.

Onyeka was involved in midfield, while Awoniyi was introduced during the match as Coventry struggled to contain the Premier League champions.

Arsenal controlled large portions of the encounter and created enough chances to secure a comfortable victory.

Onyeka’s defensive and physical qualities will be important to Coventry throughout the season, while Awoniyi will hope to get more opportunities to lead the attack as the campaign progresses.

Lookman features in Atletico draw

Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman was in action for Atletico Madrid as they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw against Villarreal in Sunday’s La Liga encounter.

Lookman was involved in Atletico’s attacking play but could not find the back of the net as both teams shared the points.

The Nigerian’s pace, movement and ability to operate in one-on-one situations remain important weapons for Atletico.

However, he will be hoping to turn his involvement into goals and assists in subsequent matches.

Moses Simon involved in goalless draw

Moses Simon also featured as Paris FC played out a goalless draw against Troyes in Saturday’s Ligue 1 encounter at the Stade de l’Aube.

The Nigerian winger was introduced in the second half as Paris FC searched for a breakthrough.

Simon provided an attacking outlet but was unable to produce the decisive moment that could have earned his side all three points.

The result nevertheless gave Paris FC a point away from home, although the club will be looking for greater attacking efficiency in future matches.
