Morgan Rogers says Chelsea are targeting a place at the top of the Premier League as they prepare to begin their campaign against Fulham on Monday.
The Blues will travel to Craven Cottage for their opening fixture, with Xabi Alonso set to take charge of his first competitive game as Chelsea manager and several new players, including Rogers, hoping to make their competitive debuts.
Rogers said Chelsea’s ambition was to compete at the top of the division, with the club expected to meet the standards demanded by its supporters.
“The fans want to see their team perform to the level that they expect, and Chelsea Football Club as a whole expect to compete with every team and be right at the top of the league. That’s our aspiration and goal,” he said in an interview on the club website.
The former Aston Villa player also acknowledged that Chelsea’s new-look team would need time to adapt to Alonso’s methods, but insisted they wanted to make a strong start to the season.
“There’s a process, and there being a new manager, it takes time to gel and fit perfectly, but we do want to hit the ground running,” said Rogers. “We believe we’ve got the ability and the quality to.”
Chelsea are among several Premier League clubs beginning the season with new head coaches, alongside Manchester City and Liverpool, while the outcome of the campaign remains uncertain.
Rogers said the uncertainty surrounding how teams will approach the new season was part of what made the campaign exciting.
“It’s exciting times ahead,” Rogers said. “I’m as much of a Premier League fan as everyone else. I know I play in it, but I’m still a fan when I’m not playing. So I want as much excitement as possible.
“No one knows how each team will set up or how everyone will play, and that’s exciting. That’s why we watch the game and why we love the sport.
“And hopefully, we’re in the exciting element of it at the top of the table where we want to be.”
Rogers said he had also been working to build relationships with his new teammates and understand what Alonso expects from him as Chelsea prepare for their opening game.
He concluded, “It’s about staying focused, and understanding it’s a journey. It might not always go perfect, but with the right mentality, with the right mindset, we’ll be where we deserve to be and where we need to be as a club and as a team.”
