THE Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Council, has said that the body would continue to fight for the rights of pensioners in the state.
The Oyo State NUP Secretary, Dr Olusegun Abatan, stated this during the unveiling of an ambulance for the Pensioners Hospital on Monday in Ibadan.
He said that the NUP aside from fighting for the rights of pensioners in the state, was also an employer of labour and contributing to the development of the state.
The secretary said that over 120 people were working directly or indirectly under the umbrella of the union including its Pensioners’ Radio, Hospital as well as its Secretariat.
He said that the NUP Secretariat, Pensioners F.M.106.7 radio station and the hospital were established with absolute contributions of pensioners in the state.
“The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Oyo State Council, has maintained a prestige of not going cap-in-hand to solicit for financial assistance from government.
” Over the years we have had to celebrate Pensioners Day without the assistance of any government, either past or present government in Oyo State,” he said.
According to him, the union had on Dec. 4, 2024 at the inauguration of the pensioners’ hospital called Sure Health Care Hospital, solicited for an ambulance and solarisation of the hospital from the Oyo State Government.
He said that the Oyo State government until now had not responded to the two requests made approximately 20 months ago since the establishment of the pensioners’ hospital.
Abatan said the unveiling of the ambulance would further boost healthcare delivery for pensioners in particular and the community in general.
The secretary further said that the union would not relent in contributing its quota to the development of the state and the welfare of its members.
Abatan also solicited for an 18-seater bus from Oyo State government, saying same had been given to other unions in the state.
He said the state under the Gov. Seyi Makinde administration had enjoyed unequaled labour peace in the state and commended him for being labour friendly.
In his remarks, the Oyo State Chairman Local Government Staff Pension Board, Mr Ademola Ige, said the governor does not joke with the welfare of pensioners and assured the union that their requests would be presented to the government.
Also, the NUP National President, Mr Mazi Abumisi, represented by the treasurer, Mr Jare Jokanola, commended the union for always setting the pace and bringing health delivery to the downtrodden. (NAN)
