Bella threatens legal action against Sheggz over alleged loans, rejects defamation claims

What began as a romance between two Big Brother Naija housemates has escalated into a legal dispute involving alleged unpaid loans, marriage promises, claims of deceit and threats of defamation proceedings.

The public fallout between ex-BBN housemates Bella Okagbue and Segun “Sheggz” Olusemo has taken a legal turn, following the breakdown of their four-year relationship. Bella’s lawyers are threatening court action over alleged loans they claim Sheggz obtained from their client under false pretences.

The development followed a legal notice issued on Sheggz’s behalf, accusing Bella of making defamatory statements about him and his family amid their highly publicised breakup.

In a response dated 24 August, Bella’s lawyers dismissed the allegations as “spurious and baseless”. They rejected demands that their client retract her statements, apologise, or stop discussing the matter publicly.

The lawyers also alleged that Sheggz obtained “several loans by false pretence” from Bella, saying they had evidence to support the claim and would pursue the matter before a competent court.

How their relationship began

Bella and Sheggz met during the 2022 edition of BBNaija, where their romance became one of the major storylines of the “Level Up” season.

The pair, popularly known by fans as “Shella”, continued dating after leaving the reality show and became one of the franchise’s most prominent celebrity couples.

Their relationship lasted for about four years, despite occasional reports of trouble between them. Marriage was also repeatedly discussed publicly, with Sheggz previously expressing his intention to build a future with Bella.

However, Sheggz confirmed on 19 August that the relationship had ended in January 2026.

In a lengthy statement on X, he attributed the breakup to what he described as unresolved “issues of trust and respect”, which he said he could not overlook while considering marriage.

Sheggz denied cheating on Bella or abusing her and said attempts to reconcile after the breakup were unsuccessful.

He also disclosed that he had bought an engagement ring because he genuinely wanted to marry Bella and believed in their future together.

Bella breaks her silence

Bella subsequently addressed the breakup, saying she had initially chosen to remain silent because she believed some matters should remain private.

She said she had genuinely loved Sheggz and defended their relationship because she believed in it at the time.

Bella also rejected suggestions that wanting marriage made her desperate, arguing that walking away from a relationship could be an act of discernment.

She referred to having received “a hundred promises” that were not fulfilled and said she had given love, loyalty and opportunities for change before deciding to move on.

She also acknowledged the various narratives surrounding the breakup but indicated that she would not reveal every detail of what happened privately.

₦11m debt allegation

The controversy intensified after alleged private WhatsApp conversations involving Bella, Sheggz and members of their families circulated online.

In one set of purported conversations, Bella reportedly told Sheggz’s mother that he owed her ₦11 million and had repeatedly refused to repay.

She allegedly complained that the outstanding money was affecting her financially, including her ability to meet rent and other expenses.

Other purported conversations focused on marriage promises and disagreements about the relationship’s future. Screenshots allegedly showing Sheggz asking Bella for money also circulated online.

However, the authenticity of the leaked conversations has not been independently established, while a court has not determined the alleged ₦11 million debt.

Importantly, Bella’s lawyers’ 24 August response referred to “several loans” allegedly obtained under false pretences, but did not publicly specify a total amount in the portions of the letter that were widely reported.

Sheggz’s lawyers issue legal notice

Sheggz’s lawyers reportedly issued a cease-and-desist notice and a defamation notice around 21 August.

The legal team accused Bella of making statements capable of damaging his reputation, including allegations concerning abuse, an alleged ₦11 million debt and comments involving him and his family.

They also accused her of cyberbullying and warned that her alleged statements could affect his relationships with friends, business associates and the wider public.

The lawyers demanded that Bella stop making the alleged defamatory statements, delete relevant content and issue a public retraction and apology.

Bella’s solicitors rejected the allegations, arguing that her social media statements were expressions of her emotions and personal experiences and did not constitute defamation.

They also rejected the demands for an apology, a retraction, or a cease-and-desist.

Instead, Bella’s lawyers described the relationship as involving an alleged “breach of promise to marry”, alongside what they called misrepresentation of intentions amounting to deceit.

They further alleged that Sheggz obtained several loans from their client under false pretences and stated that they would pursue the matter in court.

The lawyers said evidence was available to support their allegations.

Bella’s legal team also accused a member of Sheggz’s legal team of repeatedly contacting her through unsolicited messages, phone calls and video calls at odd hours. They described the alleged conduct as unethical and warned the individual to desist.

Unresolved dispute

Despite the escalation, the matter remains at the pre-action stage as of 26 August, with no publicly reported court judgment determining the competing allegations.

There is currently no judicial finding that Sheggz owes Bella ₦11 million or obtained money from her through false pretences. Similarly, the defamation allegations against Bella remain contested.

Any eventual lawsuit would require both sides to present evidence supporting their respective claims.
