The Federal Government has unveiled 100 electric buses under the Renewed Hope Mass Transit Programme to ease commuting challenges for civil servants and improve workers’ welfare.

The commissioning took place on Wednesday at Eagle Square, Abuja, with Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, describing the initiative as a milestone in efforts to support federal workers. 

She noted that the first phase comprises 37 buses, with full deployment expected by December 2026.

“For many civil servants, the daily commute shapes their finances, safety, punctuality, and ultimately their productivity. Affordable and reliable transportation will reduce risks and help workers save money,” Walson-Jack said, calling the project her “parting gift” as she prepares to leave office.

The buses will begin operations on selected pilot routes before expanding to Federal Secretariats nationwide. 

A Special Purpose Vehicle has been established to ensure proper management and sustainability.

Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh, highlighted the broader impact of the project, saying it combines welfare, productivity, industrialisation, and technology. He explained that each bus can carry up to 200 passengers and travel at least 200 kilometres on a full charge.

Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council, Olu Osanipin, confirmed that the phased rollout will continue until all 100 buses are deployed. 

He urged local manufacturers to deepen investment and produce globally competitive vehicles.

The government said the initiative reflects its commitment to translating economic reforms into industries, jobs, infrastructure, and improved living standards for Nigerians.
