SEN. Ovie Omo-Agege, former Deputy Senate President and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Delta Central senatorial candidate, has demanded an immediate, independent and impartial investigation into two alleged attacks on his supporters.
This is contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Strategy and Communications, Mr Godwin Anaughe, on Tuesday in Asaba, condemning comments attributed to Delta Commissioner for Works and Public Communication, Mr Charles Aniagwu.
The statement said Aniagwu reportedly described the incidents as part of a “campaign strategy” during an appearance on Arise News, rather than addressing allegations and concerns raised by victims.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Aniagwu had accused Omo-Agege of mudslinging against Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori ahead of the 2027 elections, instead of presenting his campaign agenda.
The statement urged the relevant authorities to condemn the alleged attacks, investigate them thoroughly and reassure the public, rather than turn victims and allegations of violence into political talking points.
According to the statement, the first incident occurred on Aug. 13 during a ward-to-ward engagement in Usiefrun, Ughelli South Local Government Area, where armed men allegedly attacked supporters.
It alleged that six persons were injured during the incident, with several requiring hospital treatment, while members of the political group had gathered to receive Omo-Agege during the engagement.
The statement said the second incident occurred on Aug. 21 in Uvwie, where “more than 50 armed men allegedly stormed and destroyed” a campaign venue prepared for supporters.
It further alleged that witnesses identified Mr Emmanuel Erube as the group’s leader and claimed that he threatened that Omo-Agege would be killed if he appeared for campaign activities.
“These allegations deserve a real, impartial investigation, not a shrug,” the statement said.
It noted that injured persons, a damaged venue, witnesses and a named individual required official attention.
The statement also rejected Aniagwu’s claim that Omo-Agege “has no message”, saying the senator had spent months engaging NDC members and voters across Delta Central.
“That message is landing. That’s the part nobody in government wants to say out loud,” the statement said.
The statement also questioned the management of public funds under Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori, citing “more than four trillion naira reported to have come into the state” and demanding accountability.
“The people of Delta deserve a straight answer on where that money went,” it said, while also raising concerns over an alleged threat to Omo-Agege’s life.
On the Emevor-Orogun Road, the statement said infrastructure development should not be used to deflect attention from allegations of political violence, urging authorities to address both issues.
“Finish the road, people need it. But a construction project is not a shield against allegations of political violence,” the statement.
The statement alleged that Aniagwu “never denied either attack happened. He could not because they did,” and called for investigations into the alleged incidents and threats.
It also demanded an investigation into Erube and all alleged participants, including whether anyone directed, financed or facilitated the attacks, as well as prosecution of those found culpable under Nigerian law.
“We are not interested in a political mud fight, and we will not be talked out of demanding accountability,” the statement said.
It urged residents to participate in politics without fear, saying the people of Delta had a right to engage in political activities without intimidation, harassment or violence.
The statement added that the incidents required proper investigation and public disclosure, stressing that accountability should not be replaced by political arguments, media appearances or campaign rhetoric.
It said that until the incidents were properly investigated, “no press appearance, campaign slogan, or road commissioning is going to make the underlying questions go away.” (NAN)
