A South Side man is facing reckless homicide charges after allegedly speeding through a busy South Side street, striking a woman riding a motorized scooter and then fleeing the scene while she lay fatally injured, according to Chicago Police.
The Crash
In the afternoon hours of July 24, 2026, a 47-year-old woman was riding a motorized scooter in the 2200 block of West 79th Street near South Damen Avenue in the 8th District when a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed struck her, according to Chicago Police.
The driver did not stop.
He fled the scene immediately without stopping to render aid or exchange information, leaving the 47-year-old woman critically injured in the street.
The woman was fatally injured in the crash.
Her identity has not been publicly released by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Chicago Police arrested Darryl Short, 45, of the 6700 block of South Stewart Avenue on August 25, 2026, in the 1300 block of West 76th Street.
He was identified as the driver who struck the scooter rider and fled, and was placed into custody without incident.
The Charges
Short faces two felony counts in connection with the July 24 crash.
One felony count of reckless homicide.
One felony count of leaving the scene of an accident involving injury or death.
A detention hearing is scheduled for August 27, 2026, at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse at 2600 South California Avenue.
Prior Arrest
CPD public arrest records reviewed by Chicago Crime Chaser show Short was previously arrested on August 1, 2022, at age 41, near 6344 South Western Avenue in the 8th District.
He was charged with armed habitual criminal, a serious felony offense under Illinois law, along with a seat belt violation.
He was released the following day.

Armed habitual criminal is charged when a person with two or more prior qualifying felony convictions is found in possession of a firearm.
It is a Class X felony in Illinois carrying a mandatory minimum sentence of six to 30 years in prison.
Chicago Crime Chaser has not been able to independently verify the outcome of that prior case.
