Andrell Brown was always smiling. His neighbors knew him as the milk delivery driver who brightened their mornings with his quiet politeness.

His mother called him her heart. His aunt helped raise him alongside her own children.

On Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, at approximately 12:50 a.m., he was stabbed during a fight with someone he trusted at his home in the 9200 block of South Green Street in Washington Heights. He was 30 years old.

Four months later, the man accused of killing him has been charged with first-degree murder.

Easter Sunday

At approximately 12:50 a.m. on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, Andrell Brown was involved in a fight with someone he knew at a home in the 9200 block of South Green Street in the Washington Heights neighborhood in the 22nd District, according to Chicago Police.

During the fight, Brown was stabbed. The attacker fled in a white sedan.

A knife was recovered at the scene.

Brown, who lived on the same block, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 1:16 a.m.

His mother was woken up with the news on Easter Sunday morning.

Arrested Four Months Later

Chicago Police and the US Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Mashaun Burton, 29, on August 24, 2026, in the 4000 block of South 91st Place in Oak Lawn, Illinois.

He was identified as the offender who fatally stabbed Brown and was placed into custody without incident.

The Charges

Burton faces one felony count of first-degree murder in connection with the April 5 stabbing.

A detention hearing is scheduled for August 27, 2026, at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse at 2600 South California Avenue.

Prior Arrest

CPD public arrest records reviewed by Chicago Crime Chaser show Burton was previously arrested on May 6, 2019, at age 22, near 9231 South Green Street, the same block where Brown would later be stabbed.

He was charged with criminal damage to property under $500 and released the same day on a $1,500 bond.

The 2019 arrest suggests Burton had a prior connection to that block long before the night he allegedly killed Andrell Brown.

Chicago Crime Chaser has not been able to independently verify the outcome of that prior case.

His Family and Community Remember Him

News of Brown’s death spread immediately on social media on Easter Sunday, with friends and family sharing their grief publicly.

His mother wrote on Facebook that Andrell Brown was her heart and a very loving young man who did not deserve what happened to him.

She said the person who killed him was someone she had trusted and treated like her own son. She said he had taken her one and only away from her.

His aunt wrote that her sister did not deserve to be woken out of her sleep on Easter Sunday morning to find out her only child had been murdered by someone he trusted.

She said her nephew Doobie Mane was like her own child and that she and her sister had raised their children together. She said she was numb and hurt beyond measure.

Neighbors and community members remembered Brown as someone who always smiled and was always polite.

Two neighbors independently remembered him as their milk delivery driver.

One wrote that he was always smiling and always polite. Another wrote that he was a joy to see and that she was so sad.

A childhood friend wrote that they had played together in the alley as boys and talked as young men, and that it hit different knowing he was gone.
