Man Charged After Sneaking Into West Lawn Under Cover of Night to Deface a Memorial Honoring Fallen Chicago Officers

A Chicago man is facing felony charges after allegedly defacing a police memorial mural honoring fallen officers in the West Lawn neighborhood under the cover of night, according to Chicago Police and 23rd Ward Alderman Silvana Tabares.

The Incident

On June 15, 2026, a police memorial mural in the 6800 block of South Pulaski Road in the West Lawn neighborhood in the 8th District was defaced.

The mural honors the lives and service of fallen Chicago Police officers who served the West Lawn community.

Chicago Police Department

Chicago Police arrested Armando Ramirez, 29, of the 2300 block of South Kolin Avenue on August 26, 2026, in the 2100 block of South Fairfield.

He was identified as the offender responsible for the June 15 defacement and placed into custody.

The Charge

Ramirez faces one felony count of criminal defacement of a memorial valued under $500.

A detention hearing is scheduled for August 27, 2026, at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse at 2600 South California Avenue.

The Alderman Responds

23rd Ward Alderman Silvana Tabares praised the officers who worked to identify and apprehend the suspect, saying the memorial was displayed in West Lawn to honor the sacrifices of officers who called the area home.

She said the offender snuck into the community under the cover of night to stain their legacy, but the community came together, worked with investigators, and showed the officers’ families who still call the area home that West Lawn stands with them.
