Kylian Mbappe scored a stunning hat-trick as Real Madrid thrashed Real Sociedad 4-1 in a La Liga fixture to give Jose Mourinho a winning return to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Mbappe’s treble, combined with a goal from Vinicius Junior and two assists from Jude Bellingham, ensured Madrid made it two wins from two under Mourinho.
The victory marked Mourinho’s first home game back at the Bernabeu since returning as Real Madrid coach, following last weekend’s late 2-1 victory at Espanyol.
The Portuguese manager kept faith with the same starting XI and was rewarded with an impressive attacking display from his star trio.
Mbappe leads Madrid masterclass
Mbappe opened the scoring before Real Sociedad threatened to make the contest difficult for the hosts.
Madrid eventually took control midway through the second half, with Bellingham producing two moments of brilliance.
The England midfielder first combined with Mbappe in a neat one-two before the Frenchman calmly placed his finish beyond the goalkeeper.
Bellingham then showed persistence inside the penalty area to create an opening for Vinicius, who tapped home to put Madrid further ahead.
Mbappe completed his hat-trick late on after running onto a superb pass from Vinicius before delicately chipping the goalkeeper.
The performance offered an early indication that Mourinho may be finding a way to get Madrid’s attacking stars operating effectively together.
The veteran coach had previously acknowledged the challenge of getting Mbappe, Vinicius and Bellingham all performing at their best in the same team.
Madrid enjoying Mbappe
Madrid captain Federico Valverde praised Mbappe after another outstanding performance from the France international.
“It’s spectacular, incredible to have Mbappe. We have to enjoy Mbappe and make the most of him as much as possible,” Valverde told Real Madrid TV.
“We have to give him a thousand balls so he is comfortable, he can score goals, and he’s happy.”
With two victories from their opening two league games, Mourinho’s Madrid have made an impressive start as they look to reclaim the La Liga title.
