The Edo People’s Initiative for Peace and Security and Nigeria Citizens Watch for Good Governance have rallied support for the newly established 83 Division of the Nigerian Army in Benin City, describing the development as a “major boost to security” in Edo state and neighbouring states.

The groups, at a joint peaceful rally Friday in Benin City to celebrate the formation of the Division, also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the establishment of the new military formation.

The chairman of the Edo People’s Initiative for Peace and Security, Comrade Innocent Ajayi, who delivered the joint speech, said the establishment of the 83 Division would bring a dedicated military command closer to the people and strengthen the response to security threats in the region.

Ajayi said, “The people of Edo had for years contended with kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and other criminal activities, which had affected the livelihood of residents and forced some farmers to abandon their farms.

“The new Division has rekindled hope among the people. We will work with the military, police and other security agencies to promote peaceful and lawful conduct, while serving as a bridge of trust between security personnel and communities.”

The groups also commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for their leadership and efforts towards strengthening the nation’s security architecture.

According to them, the presence of the 83 Division would enhance rapid response to distress calls, improve coordination among security agencies and strengthen surveillance of roads, farmlands, waterways and border communities across Edo and neighbouring States.

Ajayi, however, appealed to the president to sustain adequate funding and institutional support for the military leadership, stressing that the officers required the necessary resources to effectively tackle insecurity.
