NPC Chairman, Aminu Wushishi Dies After Brief Illness

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, has died after a brief illness.

Wushishi reportedly died on Friday, August 28, 2026, with news of his death reaching Minna, the Niger State capital, around the time of the Juma’at prayer.

His death has thrown his associates, political allies and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State into mourning.

Wushishi, a former Secretary of the Niger State chapter of the PDP, was said to have taken ill shortly before his death.

His Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, confirmed the development, saying the NPC chairman died after a brief illness.

“Yes, it is true. The NPC chairman died after a brief illness,” Nwosu said.

Wushishi was appointed Chairman of the National Population Commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and officially assumed office on December 2, 2025.

His death occurred about eight months after he took charge of the commission.

As chairman, Wushishi headed the federal agency responsible for population data, census-related matters and civil registration, with the commission playing a key role in providing demographic information for national planning and development.

Details surrounding Wushishi’s illness and funeral arrangements were still being awaited as of the time of filing this report.
