Eze Madumere, the senatorial candidate of Imo West, has pledged to end maternal and infant mortality by reviving the healthcare delivery system across the Owerri zone.

Madumere, who is contesting under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), made this known while interacting with newsmen in Owerri, the state capital.

He lamented the unnecessary loss of mothers and newborns as a preventable situation that can no longer be left unchecked in a zone made up of nine local council areas and blessed with abundant human resources.

“Every mother in our rural communities deserves a qualitative, affordable, accessible, healthcare delivery system. No woman should face danger while delivering a baby.  Every life matters and we are going to work assiduously to fix the health sector in Owerri Zone,” he said.

According to him, the Nigeria global index rating in this respect needs urgent attention, as more should be done, so as to ameliorate the situation.

Madumere said that issues such as shortage of primary healthcare facilities, shortage of professional birth personnel, inadequate emergency obstetric care, and restricted access to antenatal and postnatal services, will be addressed frontally when elected as senator in 2027 general elections.

Madumere, the Owerri Senatorial seat top contender, highlighted that his international exposure gave him insight into world best medical practice.  He informed that the same would be replicated in Imo East Senatorial Zone as soon as he assumed office, by the special grace of God.

“As someone with international exposure and experience, I am abreast with the health care needs of my people. I appreciate the fact that health is wealth and every development revolves around health. Together, we will create a conducive environment where the health of the citizenry occupies prime position,” he said.

Madumere, a human capital development expert, emphasised that upgrading and equipping primary healthcare centres and prioritizing the renovation and equipping of functional primary healthcare centres in every ward would be given adequate attention.

The Owerri Senatorial Zone hopeful, indicated that constant training and retention of professional health personnel would be on a constant basis. While paying adequate attention to the equipment of nurses, and rural health workers for maximum productivity.

“I call on the electorate, stakeholders and the entire citizens of Owerri zone, to develop a positive mind set and jump into this train which is heading to the right destination, where our heart desires will be delivered speedily. I have done it before and set to rekindle the same as a new Owerri Zone is possible, by the special grace of God”.
