The Delta State Government has commenced the prosecution of two suspects accused of the murder of retired Justice Ifeoma Okogwu.

 

The trial opened on Tuesday at the Delta State High Court in Asaba, where the defendants, Godwin Mngumi, a 25-year-old security guard, and Nnaji Abalum, were arraigned on a four-count charge of armed robbery, conspiracy and murder.

 

The offences were allegedly committed on November 27, 2025, at the residence of the late jurist in Asaba, Delta State.

 

Justice Okogwu, a respected retired member of the Delta State Judiciary, was reportedly attacked and killed in her home, an incident that sparked widespread condemnation and heightened security concerns in the state.

At the commencement of proceedings, the prosecution team led by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, informed the court that investigations had been concluded and expressed readiness to prosecute the case.

 

The team reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring justice and safeguarding lives and property.

 

The defendants, represented by their counsel, pleaded not guilty to all charges.

 

The presiding judge subsequently adjourned the case to April 14, 2026, for the prosecution to open its case and present witnesses.
