The Delta State Government has strongly condemned reports of harassment and sexual assault allegedly carried out against women during the Ozoro Festival, describing the acts as barbaric and wholly unacceptable.

In an official statement issued on Friday, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, expressed deep concern over the disturbing incidents, stressing that no cultural or traditional celebration should serve as a cover for criminal behavior.

Aniagwu called on relevant security agencies to immediately launch a thorough investigation into the allegations and ensure that all those found culpable are brought to justice. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and safety of all citizens, particularly women and vulnerable groups.

“The government will not tolerate any form of abuse or violence in the name of culture or festivity,” he stated, adding that such actions undermine the values of society and tarnish the image of the state.

He further urged community leaders and festival organizers to take proactive steps in safeguarding participants, ensuring that proper security measures are in place during public events.

The Delta State Government also encouraged victims and witnesses to come forward with credible information that could aid investigations, assuring them of confidentiality and support.

Investigations into the reported incidents are expected to commence as security agencies intensify efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.
