Commonwealth Games 2026: Tobi Amusan storms into women’s 100m hurdles final

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan took a major step towards making Commonwealth Games history after powering into the women’s 100m hurdles final with a commanding victory in her heat at the 2026 Games in Glasgow.

The reigning Commonwealth champion and world record holder produced a superb performance, clocking an impressive 12.19 seconds to win Heat One and secure automatic qualification for Friday night’s final at Scotstoun Stadium.

Amusan dominated the race from start to finish, crossing the line well ahead of South Africa’s Marione Fourie, who finished second in 12.50 seconds, while Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill claimed third place in 12.69 seconds.

The performance leaves the 28-year-old just one race away from successfully defending her Commonwealth title and further cementing her status as one of the greatest female hurdlers in the history of the Games.

Amusan, who set the still-standing women’s 100m hurdles world record of 12.12 seconds at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, remains Nigeria’s first and only World Athletics champion.

The Nigerian arrived in Glasgow in excellent form following another impressive Diamond League season, and her dominant display in the heats underlined her readiness to challenge for another major international gold medal.

Amusan’s qualification also provided another boost for Team Nigeria, which has enjoyed a successful Commonwealth Games campaign. The Nigerian contingent has already won 14 medals, seven gold, five silver and two bronze, across para-powerlifting, weightlifting, athletics and para-athletics, with more medal opportunities still on offer.

All eyes will now be on Friday night’s women’s 100m hurdles final, where Amusan will bid to retain her Commonwealth crown and add another landmark achievement to her glittering career.
