MoonPay has announced the launch of MoonPay PayBox, an AI payment vault that allows users to connect OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude to make payments directly from a conversation.

The new service lets users link PayBox to ChatGPT or Claude through a custom connector. Once connected, the AI assistant can prepare transactions such as booking flights, making restaurant reservations and shopping online. 

Users must approve each payment with a passkey before funds are transferred, although they can also enable an autonomous mode that allows transactions within limits they define.

MoonPay Labs Chief Engineer Neeraj Prasad said the PayBox combines crypto wallets and payment cards in a non-custodial vault that connects directly to ChatGPT or Claude. 

The platform supports transactions across blockchains, decentralised finance (DeFi) applications and services built on the x402 agent payment standard without giving up custody of users’ funds.

The payment vault works with services that accept x402, including AgentRes.dev for restaurant reservations, Purch.xyz for online shopping and BRIJ.fi for flight bookings. 

The x402 standard, originally developed by Coinbase, is now governed by the Linux Foundation and supported by more than 20 organisations, including AWS, Cloudflare, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify and Anthropic.

According to MoonPay, neither the company nor the AI assistant can independently access a user’s funds or credentials.

At launch, MoonPay PayBox supports Solana and Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible blockchains, including Ethereum, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum and Polygon. The company said support for additional blockchain networks will be added later.

Prasad also said support for more AI platforms is expected within the next month. MoonPay plans to expand the platform into decentralised finance by adding token swaps, perpetual futures trading and liquidity management under user-defined approval settings.

To use the service, customers install MoonPay PayBox inside ChatGPT or Claude, create an account, register a passkey, then create or import a crypto wallet. 

Users can also add payment cards and fund the vault through an existing wallet or after completing MoonPay’s identity verification process.

The platform offers two permission settings. “Always Ask” requires passkey approval for every transaction, while “Autonomous” allows the AI assistant to complete transactions within limits set by the user.

MoonPay said payment card details remain protected because AI agents never access the underlying card information. Crypto wallet keys are secured using multi-party computation (MPC) and trusted execution environments (TEEs), ensuring that no single party, including MoonPay or the AI assistant, can independently access private keys or approve transactions.

The technology is built on the key management infrastructure of Sodot, a company acquired by MoonPay earlier this year.

Explaining the platform’s security measures, Prasad said wallet keys are divided across hardware-isolated secure environments using MPC, preventing any single device or party from moving funds alone. 

He added that Visa’s agentic commerce protocol protects card payments without exposing card numbers, while passkey approvals are valid for only one transaction, reducing the risk of replay attacks.

The launch follows several AI-focused initiatives by MoonPay over the past year, including the acquisitions of Entendre and Dawn Labs, as well as the introduction of MoonPay Agents, the Open Wallet Standard and the MoonAgents Card.
