Australia has tightened its grip on the medal table at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, opening a commanding lead as just over half of the participating teams have secured medals with the competition entering its closing stages.

The latest medal standings released on Saturday as obtained by PUNCH Online on the Glasgow 2026 website showed Australia comfortably atop the table with 128 medals comprising 55 gold, 30 silver and 43 bronze, more than the combined gold medal tally of England and Canada, the teams immediately behind them.

England occupies second place with 80 medals (17 gold, 34 silver and 29 bronze), edging Canada, which has also won 17 gold medals but trails with 15 silver, 21 bronze and 53 medals overall.

Host nation Scotland sits fourth with 10 gold, eight silver and 16 bronze medals for a total of 34, while Nigeria remains the highest-ranked African nation in fifth position after amassing 18 medals—nine gold, six silver and three bronze.

New Zealand and South Africa are tied on 25 medals each but New Zealand occupies sixth place with seven gold, 10 silver and eight bronze medals, ahead of South Africa, which has the same number of gold medals but fewer silvers.

Malaysia, Wales and India complete the top 10, while Jamaica, Kenya and Northern Ireland are among the other nations to have claimed at least one gold medal.

The medal table also highlights the growing disparity between the leading nations and the rest of the field. Of the 74 Commonwealth Games Associations competing in Glasgow, only 38 have won at least one medal, leaving 36 nations still searching for their first podium finish.

Australia’s dominance has been particularly striking, with its 55 gold medals accounting for nearly one-third of all the golds won by the 38 medal-winning teams so far, underlining the country’s continued supremacy at the Games.

Beyond the traditional powerhouses, smaller nations have also produced memorable performances. Grenada, Dominica, the British Virgin Islands and The Bahamas have each celebrated a gold medal despite winning just a single medal overall, while countries including Rwanda, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan and Malta have all opened their accounts with bronze medals.

Among African nations, Nigeria leads the continent’s challenge ahead of South Africa, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, Ghana, Mauritius, Namibia, Zambia and Lesotho, reinforcing its status as Africa’s best-performing nation at this year’s Games.

The 23rd Commonwealth Games, which began on July 23, has brought together athletes from 74 Commonwealth Games Associations competing across 10 sports. The Games will conclude on August 2, with several medal events still to be decided and many nations hoping to improve their positions before the closing ceremony.
