Minister for Power, Joseph Tegbe has assured Nigerians that the government has no plan to increase electricity tariff soon, rather the ministry’s immediate concern is to improve on its service delivery.

He also said that the ministry has earmarked some universities to be lit up by solar panels  saying its plan is to ensure our universities have as much energy as possible. 

“Permit me to address two issues that have generated considerable public discussion. First, there is no policy by this administration to increase electricity tariffs beyond its current level. Our priority is not tariff increase in the immediate term. Our priority is service improvement, universal metering and ensuring Nigerians pay only for the electricity they actually consume”, said Tegbe. 

Tegbe who addressed the press in Lagos weekend added that indeed, the Federal Government will continue to examine additional mechanisms for protecting vulnerable consumers whilst simultaneously improving the financial sustainability of the market. 

This conversation therefore marks the beginning of a new chapter of openness, accountability and collaboration. Above all, it marks the beginning of what we have 

appropriately termed “Resetting the Sector.” 

“Resetting the sector does not imply that nothing has been achieved. Quite the contrary! It means building decisively upon the unprecedented reforms already initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, whilst addressing long-standing structural deficiencies that have prevented the sector from reaching its full potential. 

“Our objective is clear. To make electricity more available, make the grid more reliable, make the market financially sustainable and restore investor confidence. 

“Ultimately, we want to ensure that electricity becomes a catalyst for national productivity rather than a constraint to economic growth.
