The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has urged Nigerians to stop abusing the naira, warning that spraying, mutilating, hawking and counterfeiting the national currency violate the law and undermine national pride.
The appeal was made by the Acting Director of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations, Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, during the CBN Fair held in Bauchi on Thursday.
Represented by Deputy Director Michael Dalyop, Sidi Ali said the naira is more than a legal tender, describing it as a symbol of Nigeria’s identity that deserves respect.
She also advised Nigerians to rely only on information released through the CBN’s verified communication channels to avoid misinformation.
The CBN used the event to educate participants on financial inclusion, alternative payment systems, consumer protection, foreign exchange reforms and monetary policy.
The Bank also highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the economy, including banking recapitalisation, foreign exchange market reforms and measures to reduce inflation and improve investor confidence.
The CBN Fair has previously been held in Lagos, Abeokuta, Kano, Kaduna, Uyo, Calabar, Enugu, Awka and Gombe as part of efforts to deepen public understanding of the Bank’s policies and programmes.
