Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed why he opted to retain his familiar No. 45 shirt at Galatasaray despite the availability of the club’s iconic No. 9 jersey.

The Nigerian forward has chosen to continue with the number that has become closely associated with him since his arrival at the Turkish giants, saying he considers No. 45 to be a lucky number. Blueprint reports

Osimhen became a permanent Galatasaray player after completing his transfer from Italian Serie A side Napoli following a successful loan spell with the Istanbul club.

Since joining Galatasaray, the 27-year-old has established himself as one of the club’s most influential players, winning over supporters with his goals, energy and performances in attack.

The departure of Argentine striker Mauro Icardi left Galatasaray’s famous No. 9 shirt available, leading to expectations that Osimhen could take over the number.

However, the Nigeria international has decided against making the switch, preferring to maintain the No. 45 shirt he has worn during his time at the club.

Explaining his decision, Osimhen said his attachment to the number goes beyond its popularity, as he believes it has brought him good fortune since he moved to Galatasaray.

The striker also acknowledged that taking the No. 9 shirt could have commercial benefits for the club, particularly through shirt sales, but maintained that his personal preference was to remain with No. 45.

“I believe you will sell more shirts, but I hope you understand my point of view. The number 45 has been lucky for me at Galatasaray,” Osimhen said.

“I want to continue wearing the same number.”

No. 45 becomes Osimhen’s identity

Osimhen’s decision means he will continue to wear the number that has become part of his identity at Galatasaray.

The shirt has been associated with some of the striker’s most memorable performances since he moved to Turkey, helping to strengthen the connection between the player and the club’s supporters.

Rather than embracing the traditional No. 9 associated with centre forwards, Osimhen has opted for continuity as he prepares for another demanding season with the Turkish champions.

His choice also demonstrates the personal significance footballers can attach to squad numbers, particularly when a particular number becomes linked with successful periods in their careers.

Strong relationship with Galatasaray fans

Osimhen has developed a strong relationship with Galatasaray supporters since his initial arrival at the club.

His performances during his loan spell helped make him a fan favourite, while his subsequent permanent transfer further strengthened his status among the club’s supporters.

The Nigerian has consistently been among the team’s most dangerous attacking players, combining his pace, physical strength and finishing ability to trouble opposing defences.

His decision to remain with No. 45 is therefore unlikely to diminish his popularity, with supporters more interested in his performances on the pitch than the number on his back.

Pre-season goal boosts confidence

Osimhen has already begun preparations for the new campaign and recently opened his pre-season scoring account for Galatasaray.

He found the net in the club’s 3-3 draw against Rennes in Istanbul, giving him an early boost as the Turkish champions continue their preparations for the new season.

The performance will further raise expectations surrounding the Nigerian as Galatasaray prepare to defend their domestic title.

With competitive football approaching, Osimhen will be expected to once again lead the club’s attack and contribute significantly to its ambitions in Turkey and beyond.

Eyes on another successful season

Having established himself as a key figure at Galatasaray, Osimhen will enter the new season under considerable expectations.

The striker’s goals will be crucial to Galatasaray’s attempt to retain their league crown, while the club will also be targeting success in other domestic and continental competitions.

For Osimhen, the immediate priority will be maintaining his fitness and sharpness as competitive matches approach.

And while the famous No. 9 shirt remains available, the Nigerian appears determined to stick with the number that has served him well.

For now, No. 45 remains Osimhen’s number at Galatasaray, with the Super Eagles star choosing familiarity and personal significance over one of the most recognisable shirt numbers in football.
