Edo state Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has unveiled plans to appoint 4,000 Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs) from the ranks of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as part of efforts to strengthen the party and deepen grassroots participation in governance.
Okpebholo disclosed this on Monday while addressing APC members from the 18 local government areas of Edo state at the Government House, Benin City.
The governor said the appointments were a way of recognising the collective efforts of party members who contributed to the APC’s victory, stressing that the achievement should not be credited to him alone.
“Appointing 4,000 SAs is not an issue at all because we all work for this victory. The victory does not belong to Okpebholo alone,” he stated.
He said his administration would continue to ensure that governance was extended to the grassroots, with policies, programmes and opportunities made to reach the wards and communities across the state.
“So we are taking the governance to the grassroots, so that whatever is from the top, will also go down to the bottom,” Okpebholo added.
The governor also called for unity among members of the ruling party, declaring that the APC remained the political platform through which members collectively secured electoral victory.
Speaking at the meeting, the Edo state APC chairman, Jarret Tenebe, commended Okpebholo for what he described as his efforts to reposition the party and strengthen its structures across the state.
The party chair attributed the consideration of several APC members for appointments as SAs and SSAs to the governor’s understanding of both politics and governance.
He said the APC State Working Committee had constituted a committee to interface with ward structures and monitor compliance with the selection guidelines, adding, “the committee would collate the names of qualified nominees and forward them to the party headquarters in Benin City.”
