The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed disappointment over what he described as the erosion of democratic principles in Nigeria, alleging that university professors are now aiding election rigging.

Speaking at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi, Obi criticised the role of academics in undermining electoral integrity. “Nigerian professors now aid election rigging in Nigeria. I was in court for three years challenging my election; five judges I never met gave judgment in my favour. It cannot happen in Nigeria of today,” he said.

The former Anambra governor further alleged that professors were helping “illiterates” to manipulate elections, while lawmakers had removed forgery as an electoral offence and senior lawyers were defending cases involving forgery.

Obi also faulted religious leaders for praying for politicians he described as criminals, warning that Nigeria was facing a crisis of values. “Our religious leaders are now praying for criminal politicians for blessings. And above all, our judges are now singing on your mandate,” he added.

He urged Nigerians to confront these abuses, stressing that the consequences of today’s failures would affect future generations.
