The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, has declared an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries, halting all academic activities with immediate effect.

In a statement issued on August 12, 2026, union chairperson Terseer Abari said the decision was reached during a congress meeting held at the university’s Science Lecture Theatre. 

The strike, tagged “No Pay, No Work,” demands full payment of outstanding entitlements owed to lecturers.According to Abari, the university has only settled two of the four components of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government the Consolidated Academic Staff Salaries and Earned Academic Allowances. 

However, payments for the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance remain incomplete, with only partial disbursement made earlier in the year.

The union described this as “underpayment of salaries,” stressing that no teaching, supervision, examinations, or statutory meetings will take place until all arrears are cleared.

The resolution aligns with ASUU’s national directive from its August 8–9 congress, empowering chapters to embark on comprehensive strikes when salary obligations are unmet.

This latest action adds to ongoing tensions between ASUU and government authorities, with similar threats of strike surfacing in other universities across Nigeria.
