The United States Mission in Nigeria has celebrated Nigerian-born WWE superstar Oba Femi following his landmark victory over wrestling icon Brock Lesnar at WWE SummerSlam 2026.

In a post on X, the US Mission described Femi’s victory as an example of what can happen when talent meets opportunity, using the Nigerian wrestler’s rise to highlight the possibilities available to ambitious people competing in the United States.

“The United States is a place where talent from around the world can compete at the highest levels, push boundaries, and reach millions,” the mission said.

“Oba Femi’s victory over Brock Lesnar at WWE SummerSlam shows what can happen when talent meets opportunity in America.”

The comments followed Femi’s career-defining performance at SummerSlam, where he defeated Lesnar in a Hell in a Cell match. The victory marked one of the biggest achievements of the Nigerian wrestler’s rapidly developing WWE career.

Femi, whose real name is Isaac Odugbesan, was born in Lagos and moved to the United States to pursue athletics before eventually transitioning into professional wrestling. He attended Middle Tennessee State University before transferring to the University of Alabama, where he competed successfully in shot put.

His route into WWE came through the company’s Next In Line programme, which was designed to identify and develop collegiate athletes. He signed with WWE in 2021 and subsequently trained at the WWE Performance Center.

Femi’s wrestling career has since accelerated dramatically. He won the NXT Men’s Breakout Tournament, captured the NXT North American Championship and became a two-time NXT champion. WWE’s official profile lists him at 6ft 6in and 302lb, with Lagos, Nigeria, as his hometown.

His victory over Lesnar has further elevated his profile on WWE’s biggest stages. Reports from SummerSlam described the match as a major test for Femi against one of the most established figures in modern professional wrestling.

The US Mission used the occasion to broaden its message beyond sport, saying the same combination of talent, discipline and opportunity could be seen in American education, innovation, entrepreneurship and entertainment.

“America continues to reward ambition, discipline, and drive,” the mission said, arguing that people who compete on its platforms can reach the highest levels.
