Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Homeland Security, Major-General Adeyinka Famadewa (retd.) said there is no duplicity in the creation of the agency, explaining that its role is only to compliment other security agencies in securing the country.

General Famadewa who spoke on Thursday when he led management staff of the agency on courtesy visit to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, also said Homeland Security is not created to replace any security.

He listed the focus of the agency to include increase and unification of national intelligence programme, improve border security, as well as to establish protocol to reporting and responding to national security challenges.

The special adviser who described fake news and artificial intelligence (AI) as more dangerous than banditry, called for collaboration between his agency and the Ministry of Information.

“Information is key in asymmetric warfare. The first person to speak wins, and we cannot sit back and allow others to shape perception for us,” he said.

Alhaji Idris, on his part, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening coordination among security agencies, government institutions, communities and citizens to promote peace, security and national development.

He described the visit as an opportunity to deepen understanding of the mandate of the newly established Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security and strengthen collaboration in communicating security policies and initiatives to Nigerians.

“Peace and security are essential elements; in fact, they are the building blocks of any development that can happen anywhere,” the Minister said.

According to him, Nigeria’s security challenges cannot be addressed through military action alone, but required closer collaboration among the armed forces, security agencies, government at all levels, communities, the media and the general public.

“You cannot shoot yourself out of this problem. Security requires collaboration between the security agencies, the armed forces and the general public,” Idris said.

He assured of his ministry’s support in propagating the activities of the agency.
