The Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Hon. Justice Babatunde Adejumo, Monday, said ethics must remain central to judicial administration in the country, urging every staff member, regardless of position or responsibility, contributes to the reputation of the judicial institution.
According to Adejumo, a single act of discourtesy, indiscretion, favouritism, or misconduct has the potential to diminish public confidence that has taken years to build, adding: “Conversely, professionalism, integrity, discretion, and respect for every court user reinforce the dignity of the judiciary and strengthen public trust in the administration of justice.”
The administrator stated this in Abuja at the opening ceremony if the National Workshop on Judicial Ethics for Courts and other judicial staff.
The Nigerian Judiciary he noted further enjoys public confidence and respect because it is expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and impartiality.
“These values are not confined to the courtroom alone. They must be reflected in the conduct of every officer who represents the institution, whether you are receiving members of the public, handling official correspondence, managing confidential information, coordinating judicial activities, or providing administrative support.
“This is why ethics must remain central to judicial administration. Every staff member, regardless of position or responsibility, contributes to the reputation of our institution.
“A single act of discourtesy, indiscretion, favouritism, or misconduct has the potential to diminish public confidence that has taken years to build. Conversely, professionalism, integrity, discretion, and respect for every court user reinforce the dignity of the Judiciary and strengthen public trust in the administration of justice.
“The responsibilities entrusted to the participants in this Workshop are particularly sensitive. Many of you handle official records, confidential communications, judicial schedules, protocol arrangements, public enquiries, inspections, and administrative processes that require the highest standards of honesty, confidentiality, and sound judgment,” Adejumo said.
