…Warns Against Misconduct
The Kaduna State Police Command has ordered an investigation into the police officers seen in a viral video allegedly extorting money from motorists and cyclists during a stop-and-search operation.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, directed that the officers involved be identified and invited for a full-scale investigation.
This is as he warned that those found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary and legal sanctions.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, showed officers conducting stop-and-search duties along a route described by the Command as a suburb of Kaduna Millennium City.
The Command clarified that routine roadblocks and stop-and-search operations have been curtailed, and are only carried out where there is credible intelligence on the movement of criminals, arms, or other prohibited items.
It noted that the same route in the video was previously used by criminal elements, and that police operatives had earlier recovered 20 AK-47 rifles along the stretch.
“Notwithstanding these security concerns, the CP has made it clear that no Police officer is permitted to use legitimate security duties as an avenue for extortion, harassment, or any form of misconduct,” the statement said.
CP Muhammad commended members of the public for their vigilance and urged them to continue reporting unprofessional conduct by officers.
“Complaints can be made to the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) on 09049498983, 08075391105, and 07039675856”, it stated.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to professional policing, accountability, and the protection of the rights and safety of all residents of Kaduna State.
The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police.
