An imam identified as Malam Sadi Ginau was reportedly attacked in Sokoto State after the Maghrib prayer on Monday evening following remarks that sparked outrage over supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket for the 2027 election.
The youth in Bodinga Local Government Area of Sokoto State reportedly beat up the Islamic cleric after he allegedly used a mosque sermon to campaign for Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election and urged worshippers to support a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
According to a viral video obtained by BusinessDay, the incident reportedly followed remarks attributed to the imam during the sermon, in which he allegedly told worshippers that anyone unwilling to support a Muslim-Muslim ticket should examine their faith.
The incident occurred after Ginau canvassed for the re-election of the APC ahead of the 2027 election and expressed support for a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Eyewitnesses claimed that before discussing the issue, the imam said he had received a directive from the leader of the Izala Movement in Plateau State to support the APC from the top to the grassroots.
The statement reportedly sparked protests among some youths in the mosque, who began shouting, “It is a lie.”
The situation allegedly escalated, with some youths throwing stones and physically assaulting the imam.
Security personnel reportedly arrived shortly afterwards and intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further.
