Savio scores on Tottenham debut in Carabao Cup rout

Tottenham Hotspur’s new signing Savio marked his debut with a goal as Spurs cruised to a 5-0 victory over Charlton Athletic to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The Brazil winger, signed from Manchester City for an initial £75 million, came off the bench in the 71st minute with Tottenham already leading 3-0.

Savio made an immediate impact, scoring 11 minutes after his introduction after weaving past two Charlton defenders before firing into the net from the edge of the box.

The 22-year-old celebrated by lifting the corner flag as Tottenham fans welcomed a memorable first appearance for their expensive summer signing.

Savio was also involved in Tottenham’s fifth goal, with his contribution helping Ben Davies find the net in the 85th minute as Roberto De Zerbi’s side put last weekend’s disappointing 3-0 defeat by Brentford behind them.

Spurs find their rhythm

Tottenham had struggled to break down a much-changed Charlton side for much of the first half before two goals in four minutes put them firmly in control.

Mikey Moore opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a powerful strike from the edge of the box that flew into the top corner.

The goal was Moore’s first for Tottenham since January 2025 and provided the breakthrough Spurs needed.

Dominic Solanke doubled the advantage in the 45th minute, turning inside the penalty area before finishing with his right foot.

Tottenham added a third after the interval before Savio made his mark from the bench.

The victory gives De Zerbi’s expensively assembled squad a much-needed boost after their poor start to the Premier League campaign.

Spurs have spent more than £300 million during the summer transfer window as De Zerbi looks to transform the team and push them back towards the top end of English football.

Savio’s impressive cameo will further increase expectations surrounding the Brazilian, who could prove a key attacking weapon for Tottenham this season.
