Ex-IGP disagrees as INEC lists Angbazo as Nasarawa SDP governorship candidate

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has listed Musa Angbazo as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate for the 2027 Nasarawa State governorship election.

But the campaign organisation of former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, says the retired police chief is the authentic SDP candidate.

INEC published the list of 15 governorship candidates on Saturday.

The other candidates are Ahmed Wadada of the All Progressives Congress (APC); Dahiru Doma of the Action Peoples Party (APP); Jonathan Gbefwi of the Labour Party (LP); retired Major-General Nuhu Angbazo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Emmanuel Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Also on the list are Ibrahim Aboh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA); Christopher Mamman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP); Abdullahi Abisabo of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP); Abubakar Giza of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP); Mohammed Suleiman of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM); Abdullah Bukhari of the Action Alliance (AA); Kigbu Tanko of the Young Progressives Party (YPP); Dogo Shammah of the Nigeria Democratic Congress Party (NDC), and Shuaibu Kubi of Accord.

The development comes after Mr Adamu left the APC for the SDP after losing the governorship primary.

Abdullahi Yammani, Director-General of Mr Adamu’s campaign organisation, told the Daily Trust newspaper in Lafia that the former IGP completed his registration with the SDP online after resigning from the APC.

“The ex-IGP, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, has officially registered with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) online. He is fully in the race and ready to contest the governorship of Nasarawa State,” Mr Yammani said.

He said Mr Adamu’s decision followed consultations with stakeholders across the state’s 13 local government areas, adding that the former police chief would bring his experience in security and governance to bear in addressing challenges confronting the state.

Mr Yammani said the campaign organisation had documents to support Mr Adamu’s registration and candidacy and expressed confidence that the discrepancy would be resolved.

The development comes as political parties and candidates intensify preparations for the governorship election.
