A renewed push for fairness, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria’s tax system took center stage at Government House, Asaba, as Sheriff Oborevwori received the Pioneer Tax Ombudsman of Nigeria, John Nwabueze, during his first official engagement in the South-South region.

Dr. Nwabueze used the visit to outline the mandate of the Office of the Tax Ombudsman, established under the 2025 tax reforms, describing it as an independent platform designed to resolve tax disputes, safeguard taxpayer rights, and rebuild public trust in the system. He also announced Asaba as a regional operational base, citing Delta State’s strategic importance in Nigeria’s economic landscape.

Welcoming the initiative, Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed Delta State’s commitment to progressive fiscal reforms aimed at promoting fairness and improving the ease of doing business. He emphasized the state’s alignment with the national tax reform framework, ongoing efforts to curb multiple taxation, and readiness to support the successful take-off of the Ombudsman’s office.

The engagement underscores a shared vision between both parties to build a transparent, efficient, and people-centered tax system capable of driving sustainable development, in line with the administration’s MORE Agenda.
