A beloved United States Postal Service letter carrier who spent years delivering mail on Chicago’s Southwest Side was killed in a hit and run crash in the Ashburn neighborhood on July 24 leaving her daughter, her mother, her coworkers, and her postal union family devastated.

Churone Walls was killed in a hit and run crash at 2252 West 79th Street in the Ashburn neighborhood according to Chicago Data Portal traffic crash records and Cook County Medical Examiner records reviewed by Chicago Crime Chaser.

The driver fled the scene without stopping to render aid according to official crash records. No arrests have been made.

The crash occurred on the evening of July 24. The Cook County Medical Examiner recorded the death shortly after. The manner of death is pending final classification.

Chicago Crime Chaser learned of the incident after a coworker who knew Walls contacted our newsroom asking why no media had covered her death.

A Beloved Postal Worker

Walls worked at Southwest Carrier Annex on Chicago’s Southwest Side. She was a member of NALC Branch 11 the National Association of Letter Carriers union which represents over 4,800 letter carriers in Chicago and surrounding communities.

Family

NALC Branch 11 announced her death asking members to keep her family and the Southwest Carrier Annex Chi-Lawn/Elsdon family in their prayers describing her as a great friend, coworker, and union sister who will truly be missed.

Coworkers described Walls as the kind of person who made everyone feel at home from the moment they walked through the door. Multiple colleagues shared memories of her warmth, her humor, and her larger than life presence at the station.

One coworker wrote that Walls was one of the first people to welcome them to Southwest Carrier Annex and always made sure they had something to eat when they arrived late to find food at the station.

Another described her as a big sister and role model who always told them to live life because you never know when your time will come.

A family member confirmed that Walls is survived by her daughter Royalty and her mother Georgia Walls whom the family described as having lost her only daughter and best friend.

The Driver Has Not Been Found

No arrests have been made in connection with the hit and run crash that killed Churone Walls. Chicago Police are investigating.
