Roy Pughsley apparently liked Macy’s so much he decided to spend the night.
Security cameras captured him helping himself to food from the store’s restaurant kitchen, trying on clothes, and walking out at 3:25 a.m. with unpaid merchandise. Weeks later, he came back. He was still wearing the same shoes.

The Overnight Stay
On the evening of June 28, 2026, Pughsley allegedly stayed inside the Macy’s on State Street in downtown Chicago after the store closed for the night, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
Security camera footage showed Pughsley with a backpack moving through the store overnight.
He helped himself to food in the kitchen of one of the store’s restaurants.
He tried on clothes and kept some of the apparel.
He left the store at approximately 3:25 a.m. with unpaid merchandise.
Macy’s employees contacted Cook County Sheriff’s Police Organized Retail Crime investigators on June 28 after discovering the overnight theft.

Caught by His Own Shoes
On the evening of August 3, 2026, Macy’s contacted investigators again.
They had spotted a man outside the store who matched the description of their overnight guest.
He was wearing the same shoes. He was carrying the same backpack.
Cook County Sheriff’s Police Organized Retail Crime investigators stopped the man and identified him as Roy Pughsley, 53. He was taken into custody.
The Charges
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Pughsley with burglary and felony retail theft in connection with the June 28 incident.
