Seven people, including two police officers, have died in a devastating road crash on the A66 in Teesside, United Kingdom, after a marked police vehicle collided with a Volkswagen Passat travelling in the wrong direction.
The fatal collision occurred at about 3:39am BST in South Bank, near Middlesbrough, while Cleveland Police officers were pursuing a vehicle they had described as suspicious.
According to the police, the marked patrol vehicle and the Volkswagen Passat collided on the dual carriageway, killing all occupants of both vehicles at the scene.
The crash has prompted an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is examining the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and events leading up to the fatal collision.
Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller described the incident as a profound tragedy, extending her condolences to the families of everyone who died, including the two officers.
She said the deaths would be deeply felt by the local community and the wider policing family.
Emergency services mounted a major response, with the North East Ambulance Service deploying 14 emergency resources to the scene. However, despite the efforts of emergency responders, all seven victims died.
The A66 was subsequently closed in both directions as investigators and emergency crews worked at the scene. Authorities warned that the major Teesside route would remain closed for much of the day and urged motorists to use alternative routes.
The IOPC said its investigation remains at an early stage and appealed to members of the public to avoid speculation while investigators establish what happened.
The incident has also drawn reactions from local political leaders, with MP Anna Turley describing the deaths as deeply saddening and expressing sympathy for the victims’ families and emergency workers involved in the response.
Investigators are expected to focus closely on the police pursuit, the movements of both vehicles and the circumstances that led to the catastrophic collision.
