The Edo state House of Assembly on Monday reversed itself on the resignation of its former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, declaring that he was impeached and did not resign from office.

The development came barely a week after Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, announced his resignation as Speaker during plenary on August 17, 2026.

Following the announcement, the Assembly suspended him indefinitely and elected Hon. Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, as the new Speaker.

But at its sitting on Monday, August 24, 2026, the House reversed its earlier position, declaring that Agbebaku’s resignation was not formally presented or documented.

Speaking under another announcement, Idaiye said the impeachment notice against the former Speaker was signed by 17 lawmakers and formally presented by the Majority Leader during the previous Monday’s plenary.

According to him, the absence of an officially documented resignation notice made it necessary for the House to convert the matter to impeachment.

He stressed, “Agbebaku was impeached and did not resign from office.”

The formal impeachment was moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by the member representing Etsako Central Constituency, Hon. Ahmed Waziri.

Idaiye said the former Speaker remained suspended and directed him to hand over all government property in his possession to the appropriate authorities.

He warned that security agencies would be engaged if Agbebaku failed to comply with the directive or respond to the House.
