Sokoto state Labour Party governoship candidate, Comrade Aminu Umar Ahmad, has resigned his membership from the Labour Party and joined the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday in Sokoto, Ahmad confirmed that he had resigned from the Labour Party earlier in the day, citing personal reasons.

“I want to thank the Labour Party for giving me the opportunity to contest the 2023 elections under its platform and for the support I received from members. The decision to resign was personal and was not influenced by anyone,” he said.

Ahmad, who was also the LP governorship candidate during the 2023 general elections, said he has concluded consultations and is now aligning with the APC at both state and federal levels ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“From what I have seen, I am putting my weight behind an APC government. I will formalise everything officially, but for now I have already defected,” he stated.

On the 2027 elections, the former LP candidate urged Nigerians to vote based on the capacity and credibility of individuals rather than political party platforms.

“The party is just a platform. What matters is electing credible and honest leaders who have the people at heart.

“We must begin to demand accountability from those in office today on the promises they made since 2023*,” he said.

He added that democracy in Nigeria would only thrive if voters focused on competence and performance instead of sentiments.

Political observers say Ahmad’s defection, coming with his background in both politics and labour, is expected to boost the APC’s structure in Sokoto as preparations for 2027 gather momentum.
